Middleham Park Racing has announced the death of Lazy Griff, the talented colt who finished second in last season’s Derby, following complications linked to an injury he suffered in August.
The four-year-old had been receiving treatment and specialist care in the hope that he could recover and enjoy a comfortable retirement from racing. However, his condition worsened over the weekend, prompting a reassessment of his prospects.
On Monday morning, after consulting with veterinary professionals, the decision was made to humanely euthanise Lazy Griff to prevent further suffering.
Middleham Park Racing described the outcome as “truly heartbreaking” and paid tribute to a horse who had delivered some of the most memorable moments in the ownership group’s history.
A Derby Performance to Remember
Lazy Griff’s most significant achievement came when he produced a superb effort to finish second in the Derby, establishing himself among the leading horses of his generation.
He later added another major Classic performance by finishing third in the Irish Derby, further underlining both his ability and determination at the highest level.
For Middleham Park Racing, those results represented a major milestone.
The ownership group said Lazy Griff had taken them to places they had been working toward since the operation was founded almost 31 years ago.
Hopes of a Retirement Ended by a Setback
Following the injury sustained in August, there had initially been optimism that Lazy Griff could recover sufficiently to live a happy life away from the racecourse.
He continued to receive extensive care, but a setback over the weekend significantly changed the situation.
After veterinary advice, his owners ultimately chose to put him to sleep rather than risk prolonging any discomfort.

In its tribute, Middleham Park Racing described Lazy Griff as a hugely talented and courageous horse who brought enormous pride to his owners and everyone connected with him.

Lazy Griff’s achievements extended well beyond his Classic performances at Epsom and the Curragh.
As a two-year-old, he claimed an important victory in the Group 3 Prix de Condé, defeating Gezora, who would later go on to win both the Prix de Diane and the Breeders’ Cup.
He also demonstrated his versatility over longer distances this season, adding the Listed Coral Marathon to his record after being stepped up to staying trips.
Lazy Griff suffered the injury that ultimately ended his career at Chester last month, a racecourse that had previously provided one of his strongest performances.
Earlier in his career, he had finished runner-up to Lambourn in the Chester Vase, another result that highlighted his ability against high-class opposition.
