The key two-year-olds to follow as the autumn programme shapes the 2027 Classic markets
The most important juvenile races of the season are approaching, and the next few weeks could have a major impact on the ante-post betting for the 2027 Classics.
Several highly regarded two-year-olds have already established themselves near the top of the markets for the 2,000 Guineas, 1,000 Guineas, Derby and Oaks. Their final starts of the season should provide further clues about which horses are most likely to head into the winter as leading Classic hopes.
Here are some of the juveniles currently attracting the most attention.
Desert Castle
Ante-post odds: 11-2 favourite for the 2,000 Guineas; 4-1 favourite for the Irish 2,000 Guineas
Desert Castle arrived at Doncaster for the Champagne Stakes with a big reputation and only strengthened it with a dominant performance.
The Godolphin-owned colt, a son of Frankel, was making only his second career start but showed considerable ability as he comfortably dismissed his rivals under Billy Loughnane.
There were still signs of inexperience, most notably when he drifted to his left, but his overall performance suggested he possesses both the class and stamina required to handle the mile at Newmarket next spring.
His next assignment is expected to be the Dewhurst Stakes on October 10, where he will remain over seven furlongs.
Another authoritative victory would likely ensure Desert Castle enters the winter firmly established among the leading 2,000 Guineas contenders.
Sun Goddess
Ante-post odds: 5-2 favourite for the 1,000 Guineas; 9-4 favourite for the Irish 1,000 Guineas
Few juveniles have been busier or more successful this season than Sun Goddess.
The Sioux Nation filly has already built an impressive record, with defeats on debut and in the Albany Stakes standing out as rare setbacks in an otherwise excellent campaign.
Since then, she has collected major victories in the Phoenix Stakes, Harry’s Half Million and Moyglare Stud Stakes, all within a relatively short period.
Those performances have taken her to the top of the betting for next year’s 1,000 Guineas.
Her next start is expected to come in Saturday’s Cheveley Park Stakes, where she is likely to drop back to six furlongs.
Aidan O’Brien won this year’s 1,000 Guineas with the previous season’s Cheveley Park winner True Love, and Sun Goddess could put herself on a similar path with another strong display at Newmarket.
Darkness Falls
Ante-post odds: 16-1 for the 2,000 Guineas; 8-1 favourite for the Derby; 6-1 favourite for the Irish Derby
Darkness Falls has quickly emerged as one of Aidan O’Brien’s most interesting middle-distance prospects for next season.
The son of Camelot moved to the head of the Derby market after an emphatic success in the Golden Fleece Stakes at Leopardstown.
That race marked his first attempt beyond a mile, yet he appeared completely comfortable with the extra distance, pulling clear to score by four and a half lengths.
His performance immediately strengthened the impression that longer trips could bring out the best in him.
Although Darkness Falls holds an entry in the Dewhurst Stakes, the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster over a mile could prove a more natural target.
Connections have also discussed a possible trip to the Breeders’ Cup, where he could contest the Juvenile Turf and attempt to follow the recent achievements of Gstaad and Henri Matisse.
Musical Times
Ante-post odds: 4-1 for the 1,000 Guineas; 12-1 favourite for the Oaks; 10-1 favourite for the Irish Oaks
Musical Times has done little wrong in three starts and has already positioned herself as a major contender for both the 1,000 Guineas and the Oaks.
The Charlie Appleby-trained filly produced her most impressive performance yet in the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster, where she powered clear to win by seven and a half lengths.
It was her first run over a mile, but the distance presented no obvious difficulty.
That performance makes the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket on October 9 an obvious next step.
Appleby has reportedly had the Group 1 race in mind for Musical Times since the summer, and she is expected to arrive there as one of the strongest favourites on the card.
Another commanding victory would significantly strengthen her position among next year’s leading Classic fillies.
Folsom Blues
Ante-post odds: 12-1 for the 2,000 Guineas; 8-1 for the Irish 2,000 Guineas
Joseph O’Brien has enjoyed another strong season, and Folsom Blues could give him a serious contender for next year’s Guineas races.
The Blue Point colt has already secured Group 1 success after producing an impressive performance in the National Stakes at the Curragh.
He had previously finished behind Sun Goddess earlier in the season, but his latest display suggested he has taken a significant step forward.
Folsom Blues is entered in Saturday’s Middle Park Stakes, although O’Brien has indicated that the longer distance of the Dewhurst Stakes may be the preferred option.
Should he take that route, he could face Desert Castle for the first time, creating one of the most intriguing juvenile clashes of the autumn.
Senorita Bonita
Ante-post odds: 12-1 for the 1,000 Guineas; 14-1 for the Irish 1,000 Guineas
Senorita Bonita adds even more strength to what promises to be a high-quality edition of the Cheveley Park Stakes.
Like Sun Goddess, she experienced defeat at Royal Ascot earlier in the season but has improved considerably since then.
She defeated Libertango in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes before stepping up again to claim Group 1 success in the Prix Morny at Deauville.
Senorita Bonita produced a particularly sharp turn of speed that day, quickening decisively under Oisin Murphy to win by four lengths.
With Libertango also expected to line up at Newmarket this weekend, the Cheveley Park could provide another important test of the leading juvenile fillies.
A Crucial Autumn for the 2027 Classics
The autumn juvenile programme often provides the clearest early clues about the following season’s Classics, and this year looks no different.
Desert Castle, Sun Goddess, Darkness Falls, Musical Times, Folsom Blues and Senorita Bonita have all already shown the ability required to compete at the highest level.
The Dewhurst, Fillies’ Mile, Cheveley Park Stakes and Futurity Trophy could now determine which of them head into the winter as the most prominent names in the 2027 Classic picture.
